At the ABMEC Annual Conference and Exhibition last week, Ian Lomax received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in recognition of many years dedicated service to the Organisation. Here Ian is pictured receiving his award from ABMEC President, Kevin Sabin.

Ian Lomax is a former President of ABMEC (2011-2013) and former MD of ATB Morley, a long standing ABMEC member company.

Ian has a degree in Mechanical Engineering (Aston University) and a Masters in Engineering Management (Warwick University) and a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Ian started his career as a student apprentice in 1977 with GEC in Rugby (now called GE Power Conversion). He then became a design engineer, learning electrical engineering to complement his mechanical know-how and held a number of management positions with the company. He joined Morley in 2002 as Technical Director and became MD in 2007. Under Ian’s leadership the company introduced the world’s first 11kV mining motor whilst the turnover more than doubled and the Company was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise three times in four years. 

In 2012 Ian was appointed COO of ATB Antriebstechnik AG (the parent company of Morley).

In 2015 he returned to UK as Chairman of ATB Group UK. At the end of 2018 he started his phased retirement plan continuing as Chief Engineer for Wolong LDG Europe.

Ian has been a STEM ambassador and is a governor at East Coast College, which an FE college based in Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Ian retired officially at the end of June 2020 to pursue his various hobbies which include cycling, running and bee keeping.

He’s only managed to run 9 miles this year, but cycled nearly 4000 miles, which is nothing compared to Paul Freeman (another Past President of ABMEC).
